Starting from photos, you will make patterns for realistic appliqué figures and then work through the techniques to create them. You may choose animals, landscapes, flowers, or Charlotte's favorite, portraits of people. The class is an intricate and tricky study in appliqué and reverse appliqué, but mastery of the technique is well worth the extra effort. Hand appliqué is the focus, but a machine option will be demonstrated.

F02A: Machine Quilt Geometric Patterns without Marking

This workshop involves designs, many of them of sashiko origin, which Charlotte developed on a silk quilt that she did not want to launder; therefore marking the quilt was undesirable. Using tools and techniques, you practice four to five quilting patterns from Charlotte’s book, One Line at a Time.

This class puts architecture into pictorial quilts. You may desire to do a rendering of your own home, a city landmark, or a world-recognized structure. Topics will cover how to go about designing a pattern, choosing fabric, and deciding whether to construct the quilt in piecework or appliqué.

T03D: Gateway to Mongolia — The Ölzii or Never-ending Knot

The Ölzii, or never-ending knot, is a traditional Mongolian motif symbolizing the dynamic expanse of the universe and the endless cycle of rebirths. You may use either a dark or light background with contrasting ölzii and border to create this attractive crib-sized quilt. Shading with similar values in the ölzii adds to the subtle woven effect.

For those who enjoy instant gratification with an element of surprise, these pinwheels will delight, excite, and may become addictive. Bethany Reynold’s Stack n’Whack inspired Maggie’s technique, but she adapted it so that the pinwheels float on the background fabric. With this simple and forgiving method, all the pinwheels have precise sharp points and look awesome.

Create new and interesting blocks by inserting a lattice into a traditional favorite, the Ohio star, or select any 9-patch block. The pattern is wide open for individual interpretation, and Maggie will discuss a variety of options. Maggie encourages students to experiment by using different lattice fabrics within the block and planning a larger lattice pattern extending beyond the block boundaries to enhance the overall quilt design. Maggie’s useful tips for precise piecing of ½ square triangles will make the blocks look pristine.

Choose the quilt you want to make from 9 quilts in Sandy’s newest collection of colorful, diverse, and delicious dessert inspired quilts. These quilts all use two simple blocks as their building blocks: the Four Patch and the Half-Square Triangle. Each quilt measures no more than 50 inches x 50 inches. Sandy will provide a pattern in class, including a dessert recipe, for the quilt you choose. To make a larger quilt using one of these patterns, plan on repeating the pattern the desired number of times, and adjust fabric selection and yardage needed.

Make scrappy blocks with hearts or other motifs in the centers; cut them askew to create lopsided blocks; then combine them to make a wonderfully fun and colorful quilt. Choose a variety of fabrics in your favorite colors if you prefer that to Sandy's multi-colored quilt and come for a day of learning, playing with fabrics, and fun!

This quilt is so easy and yet so striking! You can use your stash and see wonderful results. For this quilt to pop, you must use a sharp contrast of lights and darks. Augusta used batik fabrics in her quilt, but regular fabrics work well also. You will make nine-patch blocks and split nine-patch blocks, and together they will form a star! This quilt has the simplicity of a nine-patch quilt as well as the flexibility of a log cabin quilt. The setting possibilities abound.

S06D: “Quilting in the Quarry” Mystery Quilt

This quilt will measure 60” X 84” without borders. If you would like borders or if you would like a larger quilt, please buy extra amounts of fabric accordingly. I always buy more fabric than needed. My philosophy is more is better!!. Choose a focus fabric you LOVE! Add a background and two accent fabrics. The large accent can be a medium print, and it is the larger of the two accent pieces of fabric. The small accent can be a smaller print and is the smaller of the two accents. Augusta hopes this hint will help you have a successful mystery experience.

This table runner is a terrific introduction to Quilt-As-You-Go Stained Glass. This class provides a streamlined stained glass technique using fusible interfacing, fabric glue, and fusible bias tape. You apply rotary cut strips and squares to fusible interfacing to create the body of the table runner. You use freezer-paper templates to cut the forget-me-not pieces. Learn how to place the bias tape in sequential order, negotiate curves, and miter corners. The table-runner top constructed in class will be ready to hand or machine stitch. This class is a very busy six-hour period. Most students will not actually sew in class.

F16A: Mock Mola: Raw Edge Machine Reverse Appliqué

This machine appliqué class is a great way to use holy fabric that you can't bear to cut up. You will learn this technique by working on a small project using two layers of fabric, plus batting and backing. Free motion machine stitching will attach all the layers together. Then you cut out the top layer to reveal the design. All you will have to do at home is bind it!

In this class, you will explore a low-water immersion dye process using primary colored dyes (fiber reactive MX dyes) and the colors obtained by mixing them. You will use two different sets of primaries that will yield hundreds of colors in a wide range of values when mixed. This class will teach a practical understanding of color theory, including how to mix in grays and blacks and what their relationship is to purer, more intense hues. Using the dye-recipe handouts as a guide, you will apply the basic techniques of dyeing by dyeing value gradations, tints, shades, and textures. Sutdents will explore the process of over-dyeing as time allows.

In this class you will make a small flower quilt from a prefused fabric kit. Basic embroidery stitches are reviewed using brilliantly colored pearl cotton threads (also part of kit). Learn to entice the viewer closer to your art with free form, unfettered embroidery.
