Judged Quilt Competition Definitions

Quilt: Each quilt entered must have three distinct layers (quilt top, batting, backing), and must be quilted. (See also Judged Quilt competition Rules on page 19)

Quilt Entrant: The person who constructed the quilt top. Each entrant may enter up to two quilts, but only one in any one category.

One Person Quilt: Any quilt completely constructed and quilted by only one person. All work may be done by hand or by machine.

Two Person Quilt: Any quilt that two people worked on, in any way, during the construction, quilting, or finishing. This includes quilting done for hire. All work may be done by hand or by machine.

Group Quilt: Any quilt created by three or more people. All work may be done by hand or machine.

Applique: A quilt using appliqué as the predominant construction technique. It may be hand or machine quilted. It may be completely constructed and quilted by one person, or the quilting may be done by a second person. Category will be divided between large and small quilts

Traditional: Any quilt that is predominantly pieced based on traditional style patterns and sets. All work may be done by hand or machine. Category will be divided between large and small quilts, and between one person and two person quilts. Whole cloth quilts should be entered into this category.

Non-Traditional: Any quilt predominately exhibits innovation in design and/or construction techniques. It may include mixed techniques as long as one of the techniques is non-traditional (such as but not limited to fused appliqué, painting, embellishments, or other surface design elements). All work may be done by hand or by machine. Category will be divided between large and small quilts.

Pictorial: Any quilt that depicts a person, place, thing, or scene in a realistic or abstract manner. It may include piecing, any type of appliqué and embellishments, as well as any abstract quilting or techniques that are not included in any other category. It may be completely constructed and quilted by one person, or the quilting may be done by a second person.

Miniature: Any quilt measuring less than 24 inches on any side, overall pattern reflecting proportionately reduced scale, and individual blocks no larger than 4 inches square. All work may be done by hand or by machine, but all work must be done by only one person.

Blue Diamond: Any entrant that has won 2 (two) or more First Place ribbons or Best of Show, with a monetary award, at an MQ show and/or another national show. Examples of national shows include the AQS shows, International Quilt Festivals, Road to California, Quilt Odyssey, and any of the shows produced by Mancuso Shows. State Fair competitions are not considered national shows. The quilts will be juried by the Judged Committee to create a group of 20 entries. Entrants must specify a secondary category. In the event that quilt is not accepted in this category, it will be placed in the specified secondary category in consultation with entrant. If a Judged category is not indicated by the entrant, the committee will place the quilt in the appropriate category. Work can be done by one or two persons.

First Entry: Entrants who have never entered a national judged competition (see Blue Diamond definition above for examples of national shows).

Show Chair’s Choice – “Up at the Lake”: Think about all those glorious days spent at the cabin or the lake side while you relaxed and enjoyed your family, friends and the scenery. Use those visions to inspire you to select a quilt block, fabric, or other pattern to represent your interpretation of “Up at the Lake.” When viewers look at your creation, they should be transported to that wonderful spot where you dream of being.
