Quilter of the Year

Minnesota Quilters, Inc. is proud to recognize
Darlene Zimmerman as our 2008 Quilter of the Year!

Darlene Zimmerman

Darlene took up quilting as a hobby, after the birth of her four children. The hobby quickly grew into a business of making quilts, lecturing and teaching nationally, designing quilting tools, designing fabrics and patterns, and writing books.

The first quilting tool she designed was the Companion Angle, which was introduced 15 years ago. Since then she has added: Easy Dresden; Tri-Recs; Easy Scallop; Easy Square; Flip 'n Set; three, 60 degree tools (diamond, triangle and hexagon); two, 45 degree tools (diamond and petal shape).

Darlene, who is also a textile historian with a large collection of vintage fabrics and quilts, gets her inspiration for quilts and fabrics from vintage textiles. For seven years she designed fabric for Chanteclaire, and is currently designing fabric lines with Robert Kaufman Co.

Darlene’s first book, Companions: Quilts and Miniatures, was published in 1992. Many more have followed, as well as articles and patterns published regularly in leading quilting magazines. Please stop by the Quilter of the Year exhibit to meet Darlene and experience her work. She has done much to bring the joy of quilting to others, and especially to those of us here in Minnesota.
